* * *

Mason stared at Dana’s hand on top of his and felt his world tilt sideways. She’d done this astounding thing, somehow managing to find the one way out of today’s mess. A way he couldn’t hope to find.

He was beyond grateful for what she’d done.

But he was also grateful for her. For who she was. Dana had somehow kept her warrior spirit even while wounded, whereas he had...what? Given up, if he was honest. Let himself grow cold and hard at what life had dealt him. He didn’t want that for Charlie, and that meant Dana was right—he needed to restore his own spirit in order to nurture his son’s.

After today, he could no longer shake the notion that Dana was the key to that. But I’m not ready, his heart cried out. I’m still too broken.

You’re ready to heal, his weary soul answered his thoughts. He looked at the floating flowers, bobbing and touching in no real pattern but beautiful anyway. It’s already started, right here. Can’t you feel it?

Charlie broke the solemnity of the moment. “Can we have the brownies now?” He swiveled his head around to view Mason, catching the position of his and Dana’s hands. Charlie’s eyes widened, and Dana and Mason both pulled their hands away as if burned. Mason felt the skin on his neck and jaw heat up.

“Sure, buddy,” Mason said, trying to sound normal. Maybe Charlie didn’t pick up on the magnitude of the moment, but he knew Dana had. She caught his gaze as she went to get up off the ground, and he knew that touch had crossed a line. Could he go back? Did he want to?

“Rita sent over some brownies with Lorna’s delivery of flowers,” he explained, just to fill the awkward air between them. “Seems like half the town’s in on this thing.” Knowing so many people went to such lengths to try and help his family made Mason feel both loved and indebted. The combination of feelings prickled under his skin—and around his heart.

“That’s so nice,” Dana said, sounding just as awkward. Just what was this thing growing between them? How should they handle the way it was getting stronger? Mason was pretty sure neither of them had an answer. “Rita makes good brownies.”

Charlie had already risen and was dusting off his hands on his pants. “I make good popcorn. Dad makes good spaghetti. What do you make?” He addressed his question to Dana, somehow convinced everyone had a culinary specialty.

She didn’t. And somehow, in the face of this extraordinary tradition Charlie’s mother had instilled and the homey sense of the woman that permeated the house, that felt like a major fault. Dana scrambled for an answer, coming up with “I make good coffee?”

Charlie rolled his eyes. “Well, that’s no good.”

“Charlie!” Mason called out his son’s brutal honesty.

“He’s right,” Dana said, shrugging. “Totally useless in the second grade.” And then she started to laugh. It was a small, tense laugh at first, nervous and thin.
